Madonna, the original Material Girl, landed in Malawi yesterday, where she was expected to begin proceedings this week to adopt a young girl.

Madonna appeared at court in a black dress and sunglasses. She did not speak to the reporters after the High Court case was adjourned.

Mercy, is 4 years old, her mother died just two weeks after giving birth to her. She grew up in an orphanage. Madonna met Mercy when she visited the orphanage when she has adopted her first child David. Mercy's family opinion about this adoption is negative, is reluctant to let her move to America.

Mercy Uncle said: « We never wanted to let Mercy go. She's part of our family. My mother, brother John and I said no three times to the orphanage, wich was pressing us on Madonna's behalf.»

The local Nation newspapers have quoted Madonna, 50, as saying Malawian friend had told her David needed a brother or sister. Madonna, who began adoption proceeding in 2006, took David when he was 13 months old after his father had placed him in an orphanage following the death of his wife

Some Malawians opposed David's adoption, accusing the government of skirting laws that ban non-residents from adopting children. Critics say the latest adoption would also violate Malawi's laws.
