From Circumnavigation champion to eco-warrior

Its official now Dame Ellan Mac Arthur is giving up her carreer of ocean racing in order to fight for the eco-system. At 33 she decides to put an end at her first passion, which made her one of the favorite sportsman in Great Britain. It is at South Goergia that she realised that ecology would eclispe sailing : Her next ambition will be based on preventing the destruction of the environment. « Down there for the first time I actually stopped, I realised that on land we don’t see things as precious any more. We take what we want. And it started to make me think.» she declares on Times Magazine.
From Anonimity to celebrity
It is in 1998 that Ellan Mac Arthur is designated sailor of the year by the Royal Yatching Association. But it is during the year 2000 that she become well known all around the world by being the first woman to end up second in the Vendée Globe. She keeps doing feats. Indeed, she breaks the world record of sailing alone. Despite this golden palmares Dame Mac Arthur decides to turn herself towards ecology.
Her new figth for ecology
Mac Arthurs explains that she has taken this decision after seeing the desaster in the Atlantic in the state of Georgia. Moreover, she is building a house based on ecological principles. There will be solar panels to heat water. There is underfloor heating on the ground floor and a Rayburn stove plus two wood-burners. Additionally, she do humanitarians actions in favour of children who have leukemia. Her new priority in life now is sustainable living.
